Good To Great

Rigorously supported by evidence, his findings are surprising - at times even shocking - to the modern mind.

Good to Great achieves a rare distinction: a management book full of vital ideas that reads as well as a fast-paced novel.

The best-selling Built to Last answered the question of what it takes to build an enduring, great company from the ground up. Good to Great answers an even more compelling question- can a good company become a great one and, if so, how?

Good to Great by Jim Collins is an authoritative guide that investigates what takes a company from mere mediocrity to exceptional greatness. This acclaimed work is based on a five-year research project comparing teams that made that leap to those that didn’t. Collins and his research team examined financial performance, management practices, and corporate culture to distill the essential factors that drive lasting success.

In Good to Great, Collins explores a wholly new concept supported by the meticulous research standards that provided his earlier work, Built to Last, with such substantial impact. The book begins with the provocative declaration that “Good is the Enemy of Great”, setting the tone for an in-depth analysis of what it takes to elevate an organisation.

The book is structured around key principles:

Level 5 Leadership - Collins introduces the idea of 'Level 5 Leaders', who combine personal humility with professional will. These leaders are ambitious first and foremost for the cause, the organisation, and its purpose, rather than themselves.

First Who...Then What - Before setting a new vision or strategy, great companies make sure they have the right people on board. They focus on getting the right team in place before deciding what direction to take.

Confront the Brutal Facts (Yet Never Lose Faith) - Great organisations are able to face their stark realities without losing faith in their ability to succeed. This duality is critical to making sound decisions and maintaining morale.

The Hedgehog Concept - Drawing from the ancient Greek parable, Collins emphasises that great companies understand what they can be the best in the world at, what drives their economic engine, and what they are deeply passionate about. This focus generates clarity and success.

A Culture of Discipline - Great companies create a culture of discipline, where employees are given responsibility but also clear systems and expectations. This allows for freedom within a framework, fostering high performance.

Technology Accelerators - Companies that go from good to great do not use technology as the main driver of transformation. Instead, they pioneer the wise use of carefully selected technology to accelerate progress.

The Flywheel and the Doom Loop - Sustained greatness is created through a cumulative process of pushing a giant, heavy flywheel in one direction, turn by slow turn, building momentum until a point of breakthrough. Conversely, failed companies fall into the 'doom loop', making radical changes without understanding the underlying issues.

Finally, the book discusses how these principles not only help companies achieve greatness but also sustain it over time through the concept of From Good to Great to Built to Last. The book provides comprehensive appendices addressing how these principles can be applied in diverse sectors including the new economy, non-profits, government, and for international contexts.

Complete with four rigorous research appendices, Good to Great is an invaluable resource for leaders, managers, and students, offering timeless insights into what truly makes a company great.
