Yes, Book Hero is an independent bookstore.
And yes, we have great prices!
Being independent doesn’t mean paying more for books.
It means we get to make our own decisions - and one of those decisions is to make reading more affordable to get more Kiwis (especially young Kiwis) into reading.
We choose every book we range.
There’s no head office sending us a list of books we have to stock.
Our team choose books based on what our customers want, what our team believes in, and what we’re genuinely excited to put on the shelves.
Sometimes it’s a Booker Prize winning novel.
Sometimes it’s a romantasy with sprayed edges.
Both are important.
Our team promotes what they actually love.
Nobody is told which books to rave about, review or feature.
Our team reads widely and recommends the books they genuinely think deserve your attention.
Every review, reel and recommendation takes time, care and a lot of work behind the scenes.
When we say we love a book, we mean it. We create all our own content.
We don’t follow the traditional bookstore playbook.
We designed and built our own website and systems, rather than the systems most bookstores use.
We build our own tools, test our own ideas and keep finding new ways to make buying books easier, faster and more affordable.
We’re not trying to run Book Hero the way bookstores have always been run.
That would be very un-Book Hero.
Book Hero is owned by a group of friends.
We’re not a chain.
We’re not owned by a publisher, overseas company or giant retail group.
There’s no distant head office telling us what to range, what to promote, what to charge or what to do next.
Nobody tells us what to do.
