Psychedelics and Mental Health
A scientific guide to psychedelic-assisted mental health treatment
Psychedelics and Mental Health, a scientific guide to psychedelic-assisted mental health treatment, provides an in-depth exploration of how these substances can alter our experience from a neurological perspective. The author, neuroscientist Irene de Caso, details the interaction of psychedelics with neurons, their effects on both cognitive and emotional processing, and why these effects can be therapeutic.
This book examines clinical results involving hallucinogens such as LSD, psilocybin derived from magic mushrooms, and DMT sourced from ayahuasca, as well as empathogens like MDMA found in ecstasy. De Caso provides an illustrated introduction to neuroscience, envisioning a new model of psychotherapy where psychedelics facilitate lasting healing.
The author presents a comprehensive guide to the new and evolving landscape of psychedelic-assisted mental health treatment, revealing how psychedelics and empathogens, used in a safe and therapeutic environment, can lead to profound and enduring changes.
In this volume, de Caso explores the wide body of evidence supporting the psychedelic revolution in psychiatry and psychotherapy. She scrutinizes clinical studies on hallucinogens and empathogens, evaluating their effectiveness in treating a range of conditions such as alcoholism, other addictions, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety in autistic individuals. Additionally, the book compares statistical data on treatment-resistant depression and other disorders to conventional antidepressants and mood-enhancing drugs.
Through neuroimaging and phenomenological experience, de Caso delves into the psychedelic experience, exploring mystical states, synesthesia, and the therapeutic benefits of temporary ego-dissolution. This foundation for a new psychotherapy model shows how psychedelics can help dismantle defense mechanisms, offer immediate access to the subconscious, and provide a pathway to deeper, lasting healing.
