What 100 days of living off the land taught this farmer about self-sufficiency, community and finding new purpose.

In 2025, grazier and Muster Dogs favourite Cilla Pershouse set herself an ambitious challenge: to eat only homegrown food for 100 days. What began as a personal quest to improve her health and wellbeing soon became a journey of unexpected transformation.

While recounting her triumphs and setbacks, Cilla shares how growing, harvesting and preparing her own food helped her rediscover purpose and reconnect with the natural world around her. Along the way, she also learned to appreciate the powerful role that community plays in our lives, finding support, encouragement and connection through friends, neighbours, local growers and fellow food producers.

Filled with humour, heart, delicious recipes and practical gardening tips, Homegrown is a deeply personal story about slowing down, embracing simplicity and finding joy in life's small moments. Readers will come away with a deeper appreciation of where food comes from, practical ideas for growing and preparing their own produce, and enthusiasm for adopting a simpler, more connected way of life.

Warm, inspiring and deeply relatable, Homegrown invites readers to join Cilla as she rediscovers the joy of living closer to the land and explores the rewards, challenges and unexpected lessons that come with a more self-sufficient way of life.

About the Author

Mother of three, Cilla Pershouse grew up on a cattle property in Ban Ban Springs, Queensland, with her brothers and sister. At a young age Cilla moved away from the farm and into the city to pursue a career as a performing artist. After 10 years away from the farm Cilla began to understand and really appreciate where she came from and the contributions that her family's farm makes to the community and the country. Cilla decided to move back to the farm and prove to herself and her family that she is a grazier and that she can be as successful as her brothers. Cilla got her first working dog and learnt the Scott Lithgow technique. She loves her dogs and has built a beautiful bond with them. With such a young family and a husband who works off farm, Cilla is time poor, exhausted and has more than both hands full as she takes on the challenge to train a young pup over 12 months. On Muster Dogs, Cilla was paired with a black-and-white Border Collie, Ash, competing in the experiment to be crowned Champion Muster Dog.
