Conwell was inspired to write the speech after he travelled along the Tigris and Euphrates with a guide who shared the story of Ali Hafed. Hafed was a farmer who sold his land and left his home to find riches. Obsessed with wealth, the farmer died in poverty. However, the man he sold his farm to discovered that the land was filled with diamonds and he became a millionaire!

About the Author
Russell Herman Conwell (February 15, 1843 – December 6, 1925) was an American Baptist minister, orator, philanthropist, lawyer, and writer. He is best remembered as the founder and first president of Temple University in Philadelphia, as the Pastor of The Baptist Temple, and for his inspirational lecture, "Acres of Diamonds". He was born in South Worthington, Massachusetts.
