Metabolical

It's not what you eat that's damaging your health it's how that food is 'made'. The truth behind ultra-processed food that the food industry doesn't want you to know.

Metabolical by Dr Robert Lustig delves deep into the hidden truth behind our diet culture, revealing the alarming dangers of the food we consume daily. The book sheds light on the sinister transformation of our food supply, exposing how 62% of the food in our supermarkets is not only processed but 'ultra-processed'. These products often contain ingredients from other foods combined to create something new, frequently in colours that do not exist in nature, and over time, they can severely impact our health.

Building on the success of his NY Times bestseller Fat Chance, which uncovered the perils of sugar, Dr Lustig uncovers a broader, more pervasive threat in Metabolical. He compellingly argues that our predilection for processed foods, encouraged by the food industry, agricultural giants, pharmaceutical companies, institutional medicine, and government policies, is at the heart of the dramatic rise in major non-communicable diseases. These include diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, cancer, and dementia. We often mistakenly believe that these chronic illnesses are an inevitable part of the natural ageing process, but Dr Lustig reveals otherwise.

Readers will discover that the solution lies in a return to unprocessed foods. Dr Lustig offers practical advice and a feasible plan to revitalise our own health and well-being through the consumption of whole, real foods. By doing so, we can not only improve our overall health but also enhance our immunity to viruses, including Covid-19.

Acclaimed author Dr David Perlmutter praises Metabolical by stating that it "lays bare the depth of the relationship between the recent and profound perversion of the human diet and its overwhelming health consequences." As the author of #1 New York Times bestsellers Grain Brain and Brain Wash, Dr Perlmutter’s endorsement highlights the significance of Dr Lustig’s research and insights.

About the Author

Robert H. Lustig, M.D. is an internationally-recognised paediatric neuroendocrinologist, who specialises on the regulation of energy balance by the central nervous system. His research and clinical practice has focused on childhood obesity and diabetes. He is not co-opted by any organisation or individual, does not espouse a specific diet and has cared for patients for over 40 years. He believes the food business, by pushing processed food loaded with sugar, has hacked our bodies and minds to pursue pleasure instead of happiness; fostering today's epidemics of addiction and depression. His first book Fat Chance was a NY Times bestseller and his Ted talk on sugar has over 8.7 million views.

Dr Lustig lives in San Francisco, USA with his wife Julie and two daughters.
