As you may / may not be aware I'm a long time MOTU (Masters of the Universe) fan & I was lucky enough to attend the Premiere of the new Masters of the Universe movie on Wednesday night... here are my thoughts... don't worry - no spoilers π
Firstly it was awesome being able to share my excitement with other long time fans in the audience & before we went in it was great to have some cool discussion about MOTU & what it means to people - especially those who grew up with it in the '80s. The over arching feeling among fans prior to going into the theatre was one of excitement as it has been so long (40 years). I met a guy who said that he had one of the rarest He-Man action figures in existence - with a street value of (if I heard correctly) a staggering $30k USD!
Anyway onto the movie itself....I don't want to go through the plot etc - you can easily google that... but what I will say is that overall I was really happy with the movie π Is it the deepest / thought provoking film of all time? No! But It's a great sci fi / fantasy film that doesn't take itself too seriously - but just enough enough to be entertaining & enjoyable.
The style is really in the vein & reminded me of recent Marvel movies like Guardians of the Galaxy & Antman etc - lots of big set action pieces, a bit of humor & a lot of fun.
Overall it's a fun 'popcorn' movie that does well in paying a lot of homage to it's past with cameo's & characters that are not too unlike how we envisioned them years ago when we were playing with the toys as kids. Whether its compelling enough to appeal to a new generation remains to be seen but I really hope it does as there are definitely some threads there for a potential sequal and spin-off π
Coincidently - I took my 14 year old son along who know of MOTU but isn't 'into it' like his dad. He said that he enjoyed it & that Skeletor is definitely the favorite - nothing changes there.... so take the kids - they will enjoy it even if they have no idea about the MOTU universe...the film does a great job of explaining it all.
I rate it 8 Castle Greyskulls out of 10.
Tip - stay until the very end of the credits... π
