Maverick by Ricardo Semler is a revolutionary business book that delves into the remarkable journey of Semco, a Brazilian company that defied conventional management practices to attain unprecedented success. The book narrates how Semler, the company's CEO, transformed Semco from a traditional hierarchical corporation into a dynamic and flexible workplace where employees have unparalleled autonomy and responsibility. The plot of this non-fiction masterpiece unfolds through real-life examples and practices that Semler implemented, showcasing the powerful impact of trust, democracy, and employee empowerment in a business environment.

Imagine a workplace where:

Workers make the decisions previously made by their bosses: At Semco, decision-making is decentralised, allowing employees at all levels to have a voice in the company's operations. This empowerment creates a sense of ownership and accountability among the workforce.

Managerial staff set their own salaries and bonuses: In an audacious move, Semler redefined compensation structures by enabling managers to determine their own pay. This system is designed to align individual goals with the company's objectives, fostering a transparent and fair work culture.

Everyone has access to the company books: Total transparency is key at Semco. By granting employees access to financial records, Semler has fostered a culture of trust and collaboration. This openness ensures that everyone is financially literate and equally invested in the company's performance.

No formality - a minimum of meetings, memos and approvals: Semco minimised bureaucracy by reducing formalities. This approach encourages swift decision-making and creates a more agile and flexible organisation capable of rapidly adapting to change.

Internal walls torn down: Both literally and figuratively, barriers within the company were dismantled. Open office spaces and a collaborative environment replace traditional offices, promoting a culture of openness and innovation.

Shopfloor workers set their own productivity targets and schedules: With trust placed in their hands, workers have the autonomy to set their own targets and manage their schedules. This bottom-up approach to productivity drives higher engagement and effectiveness.

The result of these ground-breaking practices is that Semco has become one of Latin America's fastest-growing companies, universally acknowledged as the best workplace in Brazil, boasting a waiting list of thousands of applicants eager to join its ranks.

This book offers a unique opportunity to learn from Ricardo Semler's trailblazing approach. Discover the secrets behind the 'Semco magic' and gain insights that can transform your organisation. Maverick is not just a book; it's a lesson in how freedom and trust can unlock human potential and lead to extraordinary success.

About the Author

Ricardo Semler took over his father's company, Semco (founded in 1954), at the age of 19. Not only did he turn the company round, he made it an outstanding success. On the brink of bankruptcy in 1980, Semco achieved revenues of $34 million in 1993 - and $160 million in 2000. Semler threw out the rule book- for example, workers make their own decisions; every corporate decision is put to the vote; people turn up to the meetings they want to be at. It sounds insane- but it works.
