The First Ever NZ Children's Book Week!

We are so excited to celebrate kids reading books with the first NZ Children's Book Week. Here's what it is and how you can get involved too!

The first ever NZ Children's Book Week is taking place from Saturday 15th to Friday 21st August and we are so excited for any excuse to celebrate children reading, and encourage parents, teachers, caregivers and other amazing adults to get reading with their tamariki.

Led by the amazing folks over at Read NZ, the theme for this year is Reading Around Aotearoa - a simple invitation to just spend a little more time reading and enjoying pukapuka/books with your whānau!

There are heaps of incredible things happening online and around the country which you can check out over at Read NZ - whereevery you are, you'll be able to take part in some way! There are awesome online author sessions, junior writing competitions, costume tutorials, competitions and more! It's such an awesome initiative and so wonderful to see such huge support for it across the board.

What are we doing here at Book Hero?

We'll have an awesome display in store of our favourite Kiwi Kids books for you to come and browse, along with colouring sheets at our little kids table, but that's not all. We'll be running two fun competitions - one in store, and one online, to get tamariki involved in talking about books, writing about books, and reading books! Alongside all that we'll be sharing heaps throughout the week from reviews of our favourite kids books, to blogs about the books that we loved as kids or that got us into reading.

Write a review and be in to win!

Firstly - online and in store we are inviting all tamariki to write a review of the books they read so that other kids can hear about them too! We'll have little forms that tamariki can write on in store (and they are welcome to get help from us or their adult!), as well as an online form that can be used to submit a review. This will go up on Saturday morning for the start of Aotearoa NZ Children's Book Week, so pop back here or visit us in store to share your reviews!

The reviews that our amazing Kiwi Kids write will get shared on our website and even on our instagram (with first name only!) - what better way to practice writing for an audience about books people should know about! Book reviewers will be in to win 1 of $25 Book Hero gift vouchers or a prize pack of free books, so get reading now in preparation for next week!

In Store Scavenger Hunt!

In store we are so excited because we'll have the cutest scavenger hunt going on with characters from our favourite books hidden throughout the shop waiting to be found! Our shop may be small but turns out the characters are pretty good at finding hiding places!

There will be prizes for those who get spotting so make sure to plan a visit to our cute little bookshop sometime from the 15th-21st August so you can join in (plus a good chance to visit before we move to our next home nearby!).

There are so many amazing books written for kids by Kiwi authors write here in Aotearoa and we love getting to introduce people to them. Here are some of our favourite Kiwi books for kids of all ages - take a scroll through to find a new fave for your whānau!

Just like us here at Book Hero, Read NZ belive that reading is a superpower, something magical and transformative! We love this new initiative to get Kiwi kids reading, and would love to hear about how your school or whānau are celebrating too.

Lizzy makes sure the Book Hero bookstore is an integral part of our local Hobsonville community, welcoming readers of all ages with a genuine kindness and love of books. The Fantastic Mr Fox ignited her passion for books as a child, and now she’s read thousands of books and loves matching the right book to the right reader - both in our bookstore and online. When she’s not recommending her next favourite read, she’s enjoying life’s small joys with her husband, Edd, and their chaotic but lovely child.
