The Wealth of Nations
In a new unabridged edition of the classic eighteenth-century treatise on the principles of political economics, first published in 1776, the author provides a detailed description and analysis of the inner workings of a market economy, presenting the fundamental principles of a capitalist system.
The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith is a cornerstone of economic thought, offering a profound insight into the mechanics of market economies. First published in 1776, it is symbolic of the period's revolutionary thinking, mirroring the advent of democracy and independence in the Western world. The book delves into the nature and causes of national wealth, exploring how countries can attain prosperity through the freedom of market forces.
In this groundbreaking work, Smith presents the idea that individuals, driven by self-interest, are capable of determining and regulating prices for their goods and services effectively. He emphasizes the importance of free trade, arguing that economic freedom leads to innovation, efficiency, and wealth. However, Smith also demonstrates a deep concern for fairness and justice, advocating for the protection of smaller players in the economy and ensuring they benefit from economic progress.
The Wealth of Nations offers an integrated and eloquent description of a market economy's functions, discussing concepts such as division of labour, productivity, and the invisible hand that guides economic decisions towards societal benefit. Smith’s arguments and theories are not only intellectually captivating but also presented in an engaging and witty manner, making the book accessible to both scholars and lay readers.
This unabridged edition allows modern audiences to revisit Smith's pioneering work, which laid the foundational principles of capitalism. Its insights into the creation and distribution of wealth continue to resonate today, influencing economic policies and thought. The book remains a vital read for anyone interested in understanding the forces shaping economies and the role of individuals within them.
