The Lost Art of Running by Shane Benzie and Tim Major invites readers on a captivating expedition across the globe, uncovering the secrets of some of the world's most accomplished runners. The narrative seamlessly blends enthralling travelogue with invaluable running advice, as Benzie embarks on a quest to rediscover the innate running abilities that humans have seemingly forgotten.

Beginning in the Ethiopian highlands, the adventure plunges into the heart of the 'town of runners,' debunking myths and sharing the deeply ingrained cultural practices that contribute to their outstanding speed and endurance. From there, readers are transported to Kenya’s elite training camps, where world-record-holding marathoners hone their skills, and the austere beauty of the Arctic Circle, revealing the resilience and adaptability required to thrive in such extreme conditions.

The journey ventures further, crossing the rugged terrains and steep climbs of Europe's mountains, leading to the sweltering deserts of the Sahara, and even tackling the formidable winter landscape of the Pennine Way. Throughout these diverse landscapes, Benzie meticulously analyses and documents the fluid, efficient movements of the runners he encounters, providing profound insights into their techniques.

Benzie’s encounters with athletes are interwoven with practical advice. The insights from his detailed analytical perspective illuminate ways readers can incorporate natural movement techniques into their running, enhancing both performance and injury prevention. The engaging narrative is enriched by contributions from top athletes, including practical tips and anecdotes from those Benzie has coached, such as Elisabet Barnes, Marathon des Sables double champion, and Nicky Spinks, renowned endurance runner.

Adharanand Finn, celebrated author of Running With the Kenyans, describes the book as "a fascinating book," reflecting its appeal to both seasoned athletes and beginners. Damian Hall, an ultra-marathon runner, aptly dubs Shane “the Indiana Jones of the running world,” highlighting the adventurous and exploratory spirit of the book.
