Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description
Stoic at Work by Annie Lawson offers an engaging and practical guide designed to help you navigate the complex and often chaotic world of the modern workplace. Drawing from the ancient Stoic philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, this book translates timeless wisdom into actionable steps that can help you maintain composure, increase productivity, and find greater satisfaction in your professional life. In his role as the head of the Roman Empire, Marcus Aurelius faced numerous challenges, from difficult colleagues and frustrating situations to intense political infighting. In his writings, particularly in his Stoic philosophy compendium, Meditations, he presents advice that remains remarkably relevant today. Aurelius's counsel to accept others' inevitable shortcomings, make the most of our brief lives, resist the temptations of fame and flattery, and maintain a cosmic perspective when things become overwhelming, offers profound insights that can be applied to the world of work. Stoic at Work brings these ideas to the contemporary office, presenting them in an accessible and relatable format. The book is structured around 49 rules for work, including practical admonitions such as: think less, suck up but don't suck up, avoid irrelevant meetings, and remind yourself that work happiness sits somewhere on the spectrum between fear and boredom. These rules are illustrated with anecdotes and examples that reveal how ancient wisdom can ameliorate the everyday stressors of the modern workplace. Throughout its pages, Stoic at Work provides strategies for managing office dynamics, overcoming mental roadblocks, and transforming your experience of work from one of irritation to one of joy—or, at the very least, making it more tolerable. Whether you are dealing with mind games, meltdowns, or the numbing reality of long-term employment, this book offers tools to help you focus on what you can control and worry less about what you can't. With its blend of humour, guiding principles, and practical applications, Stoic at Work is for anyone looking to bring a bit of serenity and wisdom into their professional life. Engage with this transformative read and discover how ancient Stoic philosophy can lead you to a more balanced, fulfilling, and less stressful work life.

About the Author

Annie Lawson is a former journalist who has had a diverse career, from wrangling a clown on roller skates on a live television show and interviewing Kiss legend Gene Simmons to writing about China, technology and climate change for corporations and advocacy groups. Even though the work differed, Annie found some common threads, whether it be people who are annoying, meetings that are pointless and language that makes no sense. She consulted friends who worked in travel, health, resources, technology, emergency services, retail and financial services for inspiration and combined their advice with the ancient wisdom of Stoic philosopher and Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
