Santiago Calatrava: In the Glyptothek offers a unique exploration of Santiago Calatrava's (*1951) inspiring encounter with the sculpture collection at Munich's Glyptothek some thirty years ago, which led to the creation of an extensive series of sculptures titled Die Aegineten (The Aeginetans).
This volume sheds light for the first time on the sculptures and paintings of the acclaimed architect, illustrating how his work is deeply influenced by Antiquity. Die Aegineten consists of 14 large-format sculptures crafted from wrought iron, placed on pedestals of aged oak. These pieces serve as modern, nearly abstract reinterpretations of the ancient warriors of the temple of Aphaea.
Exhibited in an extraordinary dialogue with the Glyptothek's permanent sculpture collection, these sculptures are complemented by a selection of 30 drawings, watercolours, studies, and sculptures that explore various themes. Calatrava's fascination with the human body and nature, key influences on his architectural style, is vividly demonstrated through this collection.
