The collection is arranged as follows:
Volume 1: The Evolution and Development of Retailing represents a history of the field covering the development of retailing, its critical formats and ethical developments.
Volume 2: The Environments for Retailing is concerned with the environments within which retailing has to operate and, as such, covers material on the physical, financial, and property support base for retailing as well as the consumer environments, public policy, and legislative frameworks. The emphasis of this volume is on ways in which the actions of retailing are constrained or enhanced by the environment.
Volume 3, Part I: Retail Practices and Operations focuses on management, the development of retail strategies and the detailed practices of retail operations. Includes concerns in retail marketing and retail logistics.
Volume 3, Part II follows from Volume Three, Part I, continuing the themes of management, strategy, and operations.
Volume 4: Comparative and International Retailing covers a range of markets: US, Europe, Japan as well as South East Asia, Africa, and South America. It considers the notion of international and global markets and points to the growing importance of the Internet.
The set is fully indexed and includes a general introduction by the editors outlining the current characteristics of the retailing field, which is further supplemented by thematic introductions to individual volumes.
