'A masterpiece of historical writing ... an astonishing overview of human intellectual development' NEW STATESMAN

A TERRIBLE BEAUTY has sold over 16,000 copies in paperback (16.99) 'The history of ideas deserves treatment on this scale' Felipe Fernandez-Armesto, Evening Standard 'It would be a dull reader that failed to be stimulated either by the questions it raises or by the answers it gives to all sorts of questions that one would never have thought of asking' Noel Malcolm, Sunday Telegraph 'An astonishing overview of human intellectual development...For him, human thought develops as much in response to changes in the natural environment - such as shifts in climate and the appearance of new diseases - as from any internal dynamism of its own. This overarching perspective informs and unifies the book, and the result is a masterpiece of historical writing' John Gray, New Statesman

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description
Ideas by Peter Watson is a profoundly ambitious and exhilarating exploration of human thought history. Spanning an impressive timeline from prehistory to the modern age, the book redefines the world's narrative through the evolution of ideas. Watson meticulously traces the origins of consciousness back over a million years, contemplating how early humans conceived their first thoughts. By examining animal behaviours that suggest rudimentary cognition, such as tool-making, territoriality, counting, and primitive forms of communication, he lays the groundwork for understanding the development of human intellect. Watson then transitions to hominids, revealing the advent of fundamental concepts like cooking, the nascent stages of language, and the formation of family structures. As the narrative advances, he delves into seminal historical epochs and intellectual milestones. The Ancient Greeks' profound contributions to philosophy, Christian theological concepts, and the teachings of Jesus are thoroughly examined. He addresses astrological ideation, early understandings of the soul and self, and the intricate beliefs regarding the heavens. The book also covers the transformative ideas that emerged from Islam, the fervour and impact of the Crusades, and the blossoming of humanism during the Renaissance. Watson captures the revolutionary spirit of the age with discussions on Gutenberg's printing press, the scientific revolution's paradigm shifts, and the expansive Age of Discovery. As the journey continues, Watson illuminates the literary brilliance of Shakespeare, the ideological fervour of revolutions, the Romantic movement's imaginative splendor, and Darwin's groundbreaking theory of evolution. The narrative extends to encompass the sweeping influences of imperialism, the intellectual shifts heralded by modernism, and the psychological insights introduced by Freud. Bringing the reader to the present day, Ideas contemplates the digital age and the transformative power of the internet. Throughout, Watson interweaves these complex topics with a captivating storytelling approach, making the vast history of ideas accessible and engaging. This comprehensive narrative not only maps the terrain of intellectual history but also invites readers to reflect on how these ideas have shaped the world we inhabit today. Ideas is a remarkable homage to human ingenuity, capturing the relentless quest for understanding that defines our species. For anyone fascinated by the evolution of human thought and its profound impact on society, this book is an indispensable read.
