Geomorphic Analysis of River Systems explores the concept of ‘reading the landscape’, which involves understanding what a riverscape looks like, how it functions, how it has evolved over time, and how changes to one part of a catchment can have secondary impacts elsewhere, across various timeframes. These place-based field analyses are contextualised within their topographical, climatic, and environmental settings. The first part of this book lays the foundational principles that are essential for the landscape reading approach introduced in the second half.
Through a process akin to detective work, the book ties field investigations and interpretations to theoretical and conceptual principles, leading to catchment-specific analyses of river character, behaviour, and evolution, including their responses to human disturbance.
Geomorphic Analysis of River Systems is designed as an introductory text on river landscapes, serving as a bridge or companion to quantitatively-framed or modelled approaches to landscape analysis that are discussed elsewhere. About the Author
Kirstie Fryirs is a Senior Lecturer in the Department ofEnvironment and Geography at Macquarie University in Sydney,Australia. She has worked extensively on river systems inAustralia. Her research focuses on geomorphic riverevolution, post-European disturbance responses, sediment budgetsand connectivity, and geoecology. Her research is used extensivelyin river management practice. Gary Brierley is Chair of Physical Geography in theSchool of Environment at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.Building upon his geomorphic research on river systems in westernCanada, Australia and New Zealand, his recent work has beenundertaken in western China and parts of South America. Hisresearch interests also include concerns for environmental justice,transitional practices in river science and management, andemerging approaches to environmental governance.
