Age range 14 to 18
Geese Are Never Swans by Eva Clark tells the story of Gus, whose life revolves around one thing: swimming. Determined to make it to the Olympics, Gus knows that the only person who can help him achieve this dream is Coach Marks. His plan is simple: convince Coach Marks to train him. Everything after that requires hard work, but Gus has never shied away from that.
However, challenges arise. Firstly, Coach Marks was previously the coach of Gus's older brother, Danny, who tragically took his own life after failing to make the national swimming team—a crucial step towards the Olympics. Secondly, Gus and Danny had a strained relationship when Danny was alive, with Gus resenting living in his brother's shadow, a shadow that looms larger since Danny's death.
This powerful novel explores the punishing and healing nature of sports. Gus's rage threatens to consume him as he struggles with his emotions. He's angry at his brother, his mother, his coach, and even himself. As Gus works towards his goal, he strives to channel his anger into excelling at swimming, the sport both he and Danny cherished, finding solace in the same waters where he must confront his demons.
Booklist: 'Packed full of emotion... An influential read with a powerful message.'
Kirkus Reviews: 'This emotional novel contains lyrical prose that beautifully captures the energy of swimming.'
