HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics.
Dubliners captures the essence of early 20th century Dublin through its fifteen compelling stories. From a child grappling with a priest's death to a young woman contemplating a life away from the mundanity of Dublin with her lover, these narratives vividly portray the daily lives of ordinary Dubliners.
With brutal realism, James Joyce lays bare the struggles and desires of the Irish middle classes, offering a unique exploration of human experience.
Completed in 1905, Dubliners was eventually published nine years later, a testament to Joyce's persistence. This seminal work was the first of Joyceβs novels to delve into his home city, marking him as one of the most influential authors of the modern era.

About the Author
Irish novelist and poet James Joyce is widely recognized as one of the greatest writers of the modernist avant-garde period, although this recognition did not come until long after his death. In writings such as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Dubliners, and his classic Ulysses, Joyce experimented with the use of language, extensively employed techniques like stream-of-consciousness and inner monologue, and pushed the boundaries of propriety with his explicit content. James Joyce died on January 13, 1941 in Zurich, Switzerland.
