John of John
New Release

John of John

LizzyI went into this new release by Douglas Stuart expecting the same utter heartbreak and emotional torture that we got in Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo (both books I loved!) but John of John was different. More rural and isolated, quieter and slower, and gentler in it's exploration of fatherhood, masculinity, queerness, and religion. It was full to the brim with Stuart's incredible prose and this time the use of Gaelic was incorporated in a beautifully natural way. This novel is about an isolated community, a son returning home, a father grappling with not just the identity of his son but of his own as well, and the ways in which we reach for connection.

Sex is a Construct

LizzyI was in the middle of approximately 4 other books when I somewhat recklessly decided to start this instead. It had me absolutely hooked from the first page - thrown straight into a strange and intimate and slightly too relatable story about loneliness in the pandemic, love at a distance, and the growing unease of our AI companions. This novella is unsettling and vulnerable and beautifully crafted. Suddenly I realized my coffee was cold and I’d barely paused while I read the whole thing in one setting, and I think that’s a sign of a fabulous story.

Swimming in the Dark

DylanSet in communist Poland in the early 1980s, this is an unconventional love story between two young men forced to hide who they are while finding their way in the world on a time of political and economic insecurity. I found the story both beautiful and sad, as so many gay romance stories are set in this time. The novel is beautifully written and easy to read - I finished in within a day. It deals with forbidden love, grief and loss, class and east/west politics. If you enjoyed Call Me By Your Name, you’d probably enjoy this too.
