The fifteen short stories collected in Dubliners are the best by renowned Modernist writer James Joyce. They were written between 1904 and 1907 and published much later in 1914. The stories explore themes of different life stages and provide a vivid depiction of gritty, day-to-day life in Dublin.
The first story, 'The Sister', sets the tone for the collection, exploring childhood. 'The Dead', which is the final story in the collection, takes place around the events of a Christmas party, culminating in a profound epiphany. It is widely considered by critics and readers alike to be a work of outstanding literary skill.
