Deserts and Desert Environments takes a global perspective in providing a concise overview of drylands, encompassing their physical, biological, temporal, and human components.
This book examines the physical systems occurring in desert environments, touching on climate, hydrology, past and present lakes, weathering, hillslopes, geomorphic surfaces, water as a geomorphic agent, and aeolian processes.
It offers an accessible introduction to the diverse components of drylands, focusing on both the challenges and resilience found within these ecosystems.
The nature, environmental requirements, and essential geomorphic roles of plants and animals in this stressful biological environment are thoroughly investigated.
Significant attention is paid to the impact of human population growth on climate, desertification, water resources, and dust storm activity.
Furthermore, the book includes an in-depth examination of surface/atmosphere interactions, highlighting the influence of ENSO events on these dynamic environments.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
Deserts and Desert Environments by Julie J Laity is praised for its introductory sections and rich illustrations, though the colour images duplicate the black-and-white ones. It serves as a valuable resource for both graduate and undergraduate students exploring arid landscapes, providing useful insights into desert conditions and processes, despite focusing less on sedimentology.
