Counting Sheep
Long before we were a nation of shopkeepers, Britain was a nation of sheep. Full of stories, history, trivia and humour, Counting Sheep explores Britain through its most influential animal.
Long before we were a nation of shopkeepers, Britain was a nation of sheep. Full of stories, history, trivia and humour, Counting Sheep explores Britain through its most influential animal.
Counting Sheep explores the indispensable role that sheep have played in shaping the history and landscape of the English countryside. Once the foundation of our nation's fortunes, sheep are woven into a rich narrative of wool, money, and history. From merchants, farmers, and shepherds to English yeomen securing their freedom, this book delves into a vibrant tapestry of culture and terrain deeply influenced by sheep.
Philip Walling, with an eye for the idiosyncratic, meets the native sheep breeds that flourish in this country. He shares stories of each breed, engaging with their shepherds and owners, while delving into their histories and confronting the current realities of sheep farming.
As he travels through the countryside, Philip encounters people from various professions, such as mole-catchers, stick-makers, tobacco-twisters, and clog-wrights. He immerses himself in this artisan heritage, rediscovering the countryside and uncovering a lifestyle that persists in parallel with modern existence. At its core, and always central to this lifestyle, are the sheep.
