Born probably 150 CE in Athens, Clement was a key figure in early Christianity with wide knowledge of Greek literature and culture. His Exhortation to the Greeks to give up their gods and turn to Christ shows familiarity with the mystery cults. The Rich Man s Salvation is a homily that offers a glimpse of Clement s public teaching.

Clement of Alexandria, a famous Father of the Church, is known chiefly from his own works. He was born, perhaps at Athens, around 150 CE to non-Christian parents, and he converted to Christianity probably in early adulthood. He became a presbyter in the Church at Alexandria and succeeded Pantaenus in the catechetical school; among his students were Origen and Bishop Alexander. He may have left Alexandria in 202, was known at Antioch, was alive in 211, and was deceased before 220.

This volume contains Clement's Exhortation to the Greeks, urging the abandonment of traditional gods in favour of God and Christ. It also includes "Who Is the Man Who Is Saved?"β€”an exposition of Mark 10:17–31 concerning the rich man's salvationβ€”and an exhortation to the newly baptised. Clement was an eclectic philosopher with neo-Platonic influences who eventually found a new philosophy in Christianity. He studied not only the Bible but also the beliefs of Christian heretics.
