The first English translation of Betty Milan's firsthand testimony as Jacques Lacan's patient and later assistant, as well as the play, since adapted into a film, that was inspired by this experience.
Analyzed by Lacan brings together the first English translations of Why Lacan, Betty Milan's memoir of her analysis with Lacan in the 1970s, and her play, Goodbye Doctor, inspired by her experience.
Why Lacan offers a unique and valuable perspective on how Lacan worked as a psychoanalyst, as well as his approach to psychoanalytic theory. Milan's testimony illustrates that Lacan's method was based on the idea that the traditional way of interpreting provoked resistance.
Before Why Lacan, Milan wrote a play, Goodbye Doctor, drawing from her experience as Lacan's patient. The play revolves around the sessions of Seriema with the Doctor. Through these sessions, Seriema uncovers the reason for her inability to conceiveβan unconscious desire to satisfy her father, who didnβt permit her to have a child. She eventually overcomes being the victim of her unconscious, realises the possibility of choosing a father for her child, and takes a step towards motherhood. Goodbye Doctor was adapted into a film, Adieu Lacan, by director Richard Ledes.
Analyzed by Lacan also features an Introduction by Milan to both works, as well as a new interview with Mari Ruti about her writing and Lacan.
