A Spell of Good Things
A Spell of Good Things
A spellbinding novel about family secrets and bonds, thwarted hope and the brutal realities of life in a society rife with inequality, from the Women's Prize-shortlisted author
A Spell of Good Things by Ayobami Adebayo is longlisted for the Booker Prize 2023. This dazzling story captures modern Nigeria and the turbulent experiences of two families engulfed by the riptides of wealth, power, romantic obsession, and political corruption.
Eniola is tall for his age, a boy who looks like a man. With his father having lost his job, Eniola spends his days running errands for the local tailor and begging, all while dreaming of a big future.
Wuraola is a golden girl, the perfect child of a wealthy family. Now an exhausted young doctor in her first year of practice, she is beloved by Kunle, the volatile son of family friends.
When a local politician takes an interest in Eniola and sudden violence disrupts a family gathering, Wuraola and Eniola's lives become unexpectedly intertwined. In this breathtaking novel, Ayobami Adebayo casts a penetrating light on Nigeria, exposing its deep societal divides and the shared humanity that bridges them.
