A Cupboard Full of Coats by Yvvette Edwards is a gripping and poetic debut that delves into the intricacies of guilt, grief, and the possibility of redemption. Set against the vibrant backdrop of East London, this novel weaves a compelling tale of personal trauma and complex family dynamics.

Jinx, the protagonist, is a woman haunted by her past. Fourteen years ago, a tragic night altered the course of her life forever, leaving her ensnared in a web of regret and sorrow. Her existence has since been a hollow shell, burdened by an impossible shame. The recent estrangement from her husband and the loss of her young son only serve to compound her desolation.

Everything changes with the arrival of Lemon, an old friend of her deceased mother, who appears on her doorstep after many years. This unanticipated visit forces Jinx to confront the harrowing memories she has long suppressed. As she and Lemon revisit the events of that fateful night, they unearth long-buried secrets and untangle an unforgettable family drama charged with violent passions and hidden truths.

The narrative, richly infused with the voices and cultures of East London and the West Indies, is a testimony to Edwards's powerful storytelling abilities. Her writing is both raw and lyrical, offering an unflinching look at the human condition with a distinct and uncompromising bite.

The book's accolades speak volumes about its impact and quality. It was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Prize, the Writers’ Guild Awards, and the Waverton Good Read Award. Additionally, it received a nomination for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, cementing its place as a remarkable entry in contemporary British fiction.
