Featuring a wide range of well-known and modern artists, new artworks are published throughout the year.
The Quarto format is named after the earliest form of European printed publication, dating back to the 1400s. This era marked the invention of the first moveable-type printing press by Gutenberg, sparking a revolution in mass communication and spreading ideas of literature, science, and philosophy of the Renaissance. We honour this legacy with our range of fine art and contemporary illustrations.
The journals are beautifully designed. The highly crafted covers are printed on foil paper, embossed and then foil-stamped, complemented by luxury binding and rose red end-papers. Our artists and designers spend countless hours transforming original artwork into stunning 3D pieces that feel pleasing in the hand and look wonderful on a desk, table, or in your bag.
Flame Tree Notebooks come with practical features too. The high-quality, 120-gsm lined pages are FSC-certified, acid-free, and bleed-proof, suitable for all pen types, including gel and rollerball. A pocket at the back for scraps and receipts, two ribbon markers to help keep track of more than just a to-do list, and a magnetic side flap help keep everything neat and tidy.
William Kilburn (1745–1818), the artist behind this design, was a highly regarded designer of block-printed cottons in the 18th century. Born in Dublin, he apprenticed to a cotton and linen printer at Lucan before moving to London, where he sold designs to printers and drawings and engravings to print shops.
