Te Pakanga a nga Maunga/Battle of the Mountains
Te Pakanga a nga Maunga / Battle of the Mountains by the iconic author and illustrator Peter Gossage tells a captivating legend from New Zealand's central North Island. This story explores the dramatic clash and rivalry among some of the region's most famous mountains. Through Gossage's vivid retelling, readers are transported to a time when these majestic peaks were not stationary but living forces vying for dominance and love.
Te Pakanga a nga Maunga / Battle of the Mountains centres around Mt Tongariro, who must confront three powerful adversaries—Mt Taranaki, Mt Tauhara, and Mt Pūtauaki. These mountains contest fiercely over the affections of the beautiful Pihanga. Tongariro's determination and strength are put to the test as he strives to protect Pihanga and ultimately banishes his rivals to the positions where they currently stand.
This bilingual edition, beautifully translated by Hēni Jacob, offers a rich and immersive experience for both Māori and English readers. Gossage's masterful illustrations and narrative capture the essence of Māori mythology, making it accessible to a wider audience. The book not only preserves cultural heritage but also educates young readers about the dramatic landscapes and myths of Aotearoa.
At the end of the book, there are templates provided to create your own mountain models, allowing readers to engage interactively with the story. You can also recreate your own battles among the mountains, bringing the legend to life. This aspect encourages creativity and a deeper connection to the mythological characters.
Te Pakanga a nga Maunga / Battle of the Mountains is part of a series of bilingual Māori-English editions by Peter Gossage. Other titles in the series include Te Hopu a Maui i a te Ra / How Maui Slowed the Sun and Te-Ika-a-Maui / The Fish of Maui.
