Berserk Volume 19

The bewildered and near-mad Casca, former captain of the Band of the Hawk--and former lover of Guts, the Black Swordsman--has been adopted by Midlands pagan cults as a witch, due to her demonic Mark of Sacrifice. But the Holy Iron Chain Knights campaign to rid the kingdom of heretics puts Casca in mortal danger, and Guts is having none of it.

In Berserk Volume 19, the haunting saga of Guts, the relentless Black Swordsman, deepens as he battles against both human and demonic adversaries in a world drenched in darkness. This volume thrusts readers further into the gritty medieval landscape where the lines between friend and foe are blurred, and survival takes precedence over morality.

Amidst this chaos is Casca, once the formidable captain of the Band of the Hawk and Guts' former lover. Her bewildered state, a tragic consequence of her past traumas, leaves her vulnerable and displaced. Misjudged by the superstitious and desperate local populace, she becomes the target of Midland's pagan cults. They revere her as a witch, a figure marked by the ominous, otherworldly Mark of Sacrifice. This mark, a symbol of sacrifice and damnation, draws unwanted attention from both the living and the dead.

However, Casca's torment does not go unnoticed. The Holy Iron Chain Knights, a fanatical faction committed to eradicating heresy, embark on a zealous crusade to cleanse the kingdom of what they perceive as evil. Their fervent campaign inadvertently puts Casca in peril, as they see her as a threat that must be eliminated at all costs. Yet, Guts remains undeterred, driven by an unwavering resolve to protect her from their lethal intentions.

As the narrative unfolds, the true depth of danger is revealed. The demonic spirits, enticed by Casca's brand, begin to possess the heretics. This possession unleashes terrifying forces of hell, turning friend against friend and adding another layer of horror to the unfolding drama. However, in this relentless struggle between light and darkness, Guts' tenacity and undying fury promise a battle that neither man nor monster will easily overcome.

Kentaro Miura's Berserk Volume 19 combines visceral action with profound themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the relentless quest for redemption. As Guts continues his grim journey, readers are drawn into a tale of intense emotion and breathtaking spectacle, a testament to Miura's masterful storytelling and intricate artistry. This volume is a must-read for fans who crave a complex, character-driven narrative set against the backdrop of an epic battle for survival.

About the Author

While attending college at Nihon University, in 1988, Kentaro Miura debuted a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken (Fist Of The North Star). In 1990, the first volume Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga entitled Japan. Miura's fame grew after Berserk began "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of this masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary manga artists. In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan made, ranging from statues and action figures, to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentaro Miura received the second place in the Tezuka Osamu (Astro Boy) Cultural Prize of Excellence for Berserk. The author lives in Tokyo, Japan.
