Dear Moko by Dr Hinemoa Elder is a captivating anthology designed to speak directly to the hearts of mokopuna—grandchildren and descendants of all ages. This remarkable book is a follow-up to her bestselling work, Aroha, and it continues to delve into the profound wisdom of Māori culture through the sharing of whakataukī (proverbs) and whakatauakī (sayings). This collection is beautifully illustrated by Miriama Grace-Smith, ensuring that it dazzles and inspires not only through its words but also through its vibrant visuals. Each page is a discovery, revealing insights and secrets that resonate on multiple readings, making Dear Moko a perennial treasure in any home.

New beginnings, the cycles of life, and the strength found within community and self—these are but a few of the themes explored in this elegant prose. The whakataukī and whakatauakī selected by Dr Elder carry timeless messages that extend beyond cultural boundaries, offering lessons on resilience, love, and hope.

For example, the proverb "Puanga kai rau" refers to Puanga, the star that heralds a time of abundance and new ventures. Such sayings help readers of all ages to navigate life's challenges by shifting their perspectives and embracing an enduring wisdom that has been passed down through generations.

Every story in Dear Moko has the potential to evoke a range of emotions. Some tales will make you smile and laugh out loud, providing moments of joy and levity. Others will invite you to reflect deeply, offering solace and new ways to approach life's difficulties.

The timeless words encapsulated in this book are not merely to be read; they are to be lived by. They inspire generations to come with core values such as manaakitanga (love for each other), kaitiakitanga (respect for our planet), whanaungatanga (community and connectivity), and tino rangatiratanga (self-determination).

By weaving these principles into the very fabric of her stories, Dr Elder ensures that Dear Moko is more than just a book—it is a guide to living a rich, connected, and purposeful life. It is destined to be embraced by every whānau (family), becoming a beloved heirloom that imparts wisdom and encouragement to all who read it.

Dear Moko is not only a heartfelt exploration of Māori proverbs but also a universal guide to finding strength and inspiration within one's heritage and community. It is a must-read for anyone seeking wisdom and solace in the modern world.
