I was so saddened when I heard of the passing of Sam Neill. I've enjoyed so many of his films and TV shows from when I was young and then over the years. I remember how big of a deal Jurassic Park was when it came out. This was a time when you had to ring up to book movie tickets or go to the cinema to purchase them in advance. I think my mum bought our tickets like 2 weeks before it was out! I enjoyed watching The Piano, Peaky Blinders, Omen III (especially as I love all things horror) and most recently Hunt for the Wilderpeople. I watched that movie a couple of times at the movies and so many times since. I loved the relationship that formed between him and Julian Dennison's character and just all the classic Taika Waititi humour throughout the film.
It was during the covid lockdowns when I found out about Sam's animal sanctuary and winery, Two Paddocks. His video's went viral with his hilarious updates of life on the farm and introducing his celebrity named animals. They were a highlight during a time that was so uncertain for everyone. It surprised me just how funny he is in real life I guess because he has always played quite serious roles I always assumed he was a naturally serious person. He seemed to me a very humble, down to earth person who even though was so well known internationally he always supported Aotearoa filmmakers and stories especially Māori and Pacifica as well as supporting Aboriginal rights in Australia.
When his memoir was released in 2024 he gave everyone even more of an insight into his life growing up in New Zealand, how he started his acting career and life on his vineyard. It's been so lovely to see so many readers connect with Sam to learn more about his amazing career and life.
With the NZ Film Festival currently on in Tāmaki Makaurau I keep thinking about Sam Neill and his incredible legacy over decades of his film career. The other night I went to see a film at The Hollywood in Avondale as part of the festival. It's one of my favourite cinemas who always celebrate and honour those who have passed in cinema. They made a touching video tribute to Sam which you can view on their Instagram and re-played a number of his films recently.
I've loved seeing all the posts from so many people around the world from fellow cast members of his films to fans of his work sharing their favourite films or special moments they had with Sam while on set. He's left a legacy through his films, book, winery, animal sanctuary and activism for Indegenious rights.
