That Will Never Work
In the vein of Phil Knight's SHOE DOG, this is the inside story of the creation of Netflix, one of the world's most successful entertainment companies, from the very first CEO.
Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! DescriptionThat Will Never Work by Marc Randolph is an enthralling and enlightening memoir that takes readers on a journey through the birth and rise of Netflix, one of the world's most successful tech start-ups. Through Randolph's engaging narrative, we are gifted a first-hand account of how a simple, seemingly impractical idea transformed the entertainment industry and became a household name.
Set against the backdrop of the late 1990s, when the concept of video streaming was still science fiction and brick-and-mortar video stores were at their peak, Marc Randolph chronicles the challenges, setbacks, and triumphs he experienced in transforming his wild idea into a global phenomenon. It all begins with Randolph brainstorming potential business ventures with his partner, Reed Hastings. From the peculiar notion of personalised baseball bats to the revolutionary idea of renting movies over the internet, Randolph's persistent creativity and boundless enthusiasm lay the foundation for what would eventually become Netflix.
The book delves into the almost laughable scepticism they faced, the logistical nightmares of shipping DVDs, and the trials of securing investment and navigating the competitive digital landscape. As the company's first CEO, Randolph's candid humour and genuine reflections offer invaluable insights into the entrepreneurial spirit, illustrating how perseverance, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace failure can lead to extraordinary success.
Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, describes the book as, "Engaging and insightful." Decca Aitkenhead from The Sunday Times praises it as, "Charming, fascinating and very funny. Marc Randolph demystifies the world of Silicon Valley start-ups and makes you laugh a lot along the way." This sentiment is echoed by The Washington Post, which calls it, "A charming first-person account of the early days of one of the most successful tech start-ups ever."
That Will Never Work is more than just a business memoir; it's a guide for anyone with a dream yet to be realised. It's a story full of counter-intuitive concepts and lessons on how to navigate disappointments and celebrate victories. Randolph's "binge-worthy prose" answers fundamental questions about taking leaps of faith: How do you start a business from scratch? How do you handle failure and keep moving forward? What truly defines success?
From the intricacies of idea generation to the nuances of team building and recognising the right moment to move on, That Will Never Work stands out as one of the most dramatic and insightful entrepreneurial stories of our time.
