Welcome to the Grief Club offers a compassionate and relatable exploration of grief, blending Janine Kwoh's personal experiences with insights from others who have faced loss. Through brief writings, hand-drawn illustrations, and thoughtful observations, the book navigates the complex, often unexpected emotions that accompany grief. It emphasises that there is no single correct way to grieve, granting permission to mourn in one's own time and style. The book provides gentle reassurances that grief, while not linear, evolves and softens over time.

This book is ideal for those experiencing grief or supporting someone who is. Its empathetic approach makes it suitable for readers seeking comfort, understanding, and a sense of connection during difficult times.

Book Hero thinking about your next read

A different and very modern kind of grief book: not a book about how to grieve, but rather a reflection and affirmation of how we grieve, with thoughtful writing and a graphic approach. Janine Kwoh's expression of her grief experience alongside universal truths allow readers to laugh, cry, take what’s useful and leave what’s not, and ultimately feel more seen and less alone.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Welcome to the Grief Club – a place where one human who experienced a terrible loss, Janine Kwoh, is at the door to welcome other humans who are grieving. It is not an instruction manual, or a step-by-step playbook, or a memoir. It is, rather, a fresh, empathetic approach to all of the surprising, confusing, brutal, funny, and downright bizarre parts of grief.

Combining her own experiences with grief – the author’s partner died when both were in their late 20s – with what she learned from others in her 'grief club', Kwoh uses brief writings and observations, hand-drawn illustrations, and diagrams to explore all the different ways grief happens. Plus, wisdom and understanding in every line – there is no right or wrong way to grieve – and permission to grieve in whichever ways you need, for however long you need to. What to do when the world is your grief trigger. Signs you have grief brain. And gentle assurances: Grief isn’t linear, but it does change and will soften over time.

It is a book to put into the hands of anyone who is grieving, because from its very first page, that person will know they are no longer alone.

About the Author

Janine Kwoh is the owner and designer of Kwohtations, a stationery company and letterpress print and design studio. Kwohtations is an ever-evolving collection of greeting cards and gifts that reflect and celebrate a diversity of identities and life experiences, always with humour and empathy. Janine'sΒ hope is that others will recognise some of themselves in what she creates and feel a bit more seen, more connected, and less alone. While Janine doesn’t have any formal training in writing or illustration, she believes you can learn how to do anything by reading the internet and asking for help. Exhibit A: This book. When she’s not printing cards or writing about grief, you can often find her trying to keep her ducks in a row, but one of them is always wandering off in search of snacks. Janine currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, but considers home to be wherever her friends are.
