Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Waste(d) Collectors – Politics of Urban Exclusion in Mumbai by Sneha Sharma explores the intersection of waste management and social hierarchies in one of the world's largest cities. Through ethnographic research at a Mumbai dumping site, Sharma reveals how urban spaces and marginalised populations are rendered 'waste' by both formal and informal exclusionary practices. The book challenges the traditional techno-managerial view of waste disposal, uncovering the socio-cultural beliefs underpinning urban exclusion and marginality in the global South.

A matter of waste: shaping governance, people and cities of the global South.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Scientific practices of removing waste in mega-cities of the global South are embedded in socio-cultural belief systems which reproduce existing social hierarchies. Thus, going beyond a techno-managerial approach in waste management, Sneha Sharma critically interrogates the politics around urban waste disposal in Mumbai, India.

She undertakes an ethnographic journey to the city's most unwanted space, a dumping site, to reveal how spaces and people are made into waste through exclusionary formal and informal practices. Offering new insights on topics of urban marginality, informality, and urban planning, this book will attract scholars from sociology, urban studies, and human geography.

Waste(d) Collectors – Politics of Urban Exclusion in Mumbai provides a compelling analysis that broadens the understanding of urban exclusion and the socio-political dynamics at play in waste management.
