War and an Irish Town is Eamonn McCann's classic portrayal of growing up Catholic in a Northern Irish ghetto during a turbulent era. First published in 1974, it offers an eyewitness account of life in Derry, where McCann witnessed the transformation of the civil rights movement from a peaceful campaign to a militant struggle against British rule. The book explores the emotional and political landscape of the conflict and argues that those early ideals remain vital for resolving Northern Ireland's troubles.

War and an Irish Town is Eamonn McCann's classic account of growing up Catholic in a Northern Irish ghetto.

Eamonn McCann's memoir of growing up Catholic in a Northern Irish ghetto was first published in 1974 and quickly became recognised as a classic account of the sentiments evoked by British rule. At the heart of events in Derry, McCann witnessed firsthand the evolution of the civil rights movement. What began as a mild campaign for 'British Democracy' transformed into a full-scale military assault on the British state.

McCann argues persuasively that the ideals which motivated the early movement remain the only viable solution to the ongoing turmoil in Northern Ireland.
