In 2011, Queen Elizabeth made her first-ever state visit to the Irish Republic. It was a significant and moving occasion. By settling its relationship with Ireland, Britain also aimed to settle its relationship with the rest of the world, positioning itself as a normal, equal democracy. However, this newfound understanding was not to last.
Then came the 2016 referendum, marking the beginning of the events detailed in Three Years in Hell.
