There's a War Going On But No One Can See It by Huib Modderkolk is a gripping exploration into the unseen battles waged in the digital realm. In the summer of 2017, an unprecedented cyberattack rendered computer screens blank in 150 countries. The UK's National Health Service (NHS) was critically impacted – hospitals could only accept A&E patients, and ambulances were immobilised. Computer screens turned on spontaneously with chilling warnings, as frantic employees discovered that pulling the plugs and restarting was futile; the systems were locked, and the attackers demanded ransoms. This is but one stark illustration of our vulnerability in an increasingly digital world. Drawing from six years of painstaking investigations, Modderkolk, an award-winning Dutch journalist, delves deep into the secretive corridors and concealed backdoors of the global digital infrastructure. His narrative skillfully reconstructs espionage operations conducted by British-American intelligence, shedding light on the covert battles fought between nations over the control and dissemination of information. Through detailed accounts of pivotal figures such as whistleblower Edward Snowden, the audacious Russian hacker collective Cozy Bear, and Evgeniy Bogachev – infamously dubbed ‘the Pablo Escobar of the digital era’ – Modderkolk unveils the intricate machinations of cyber warfare. Readers are introduced to a world where spies and criminals clash in an invisible war that implicates us all.

‘A brilliant page-turner by one of Holland's finest investigative journalists' – Rutger Bregman, author of Humankind

‘Essential . . . What’s revealed are networks of spies and criminals fighting an invisible war that involves us all’ – Eliot Higgins, bestselling author of We Are Bellingcat

There's a War Going On But No One Can See It masterfully combines investigative journalism with the pacing of a thriller, offering an eye-opening perspective on the hidden conflicts that define our modern world. Through riveting storytelling and meticulous research, Modderkolk not only exposes the dark underbelly of the digital landscape but also prompts us to reconsider our own security and privacy in an era of technological dependence.
