Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
The Word Made Strange by John Milbank offers a profound theological exploration of language and its implications for understanding meaning. Milbank challenges secular interpretations of language, arguing that true meaning is only accessible through a theological lens. The essays deepen the themes from his earlier work, Theology and Social Theory, presenting a theology that is orthodox in an unexpected yet challenging way. Milbank contends that the divine word, though incarnate, is mediated through human discourse, fundamentally transforming these discourses at their core. This thought-provoking volume spans theology, language, and culture, enriching intellectual discussions across multiple disciplines.

The essays in this new book from John Milbank range over the entire field of theology, and both extend and enrich the theological perspective underlying his earlier Theology and Social Theory.

In the essays, Milbank offers a theological account of language and suggests that no secular construct of language offers any true possibility of meaning. He then applies this account across a wide range of theological topics, offering us a new theology which is orthodox in a surprising and disturbing way.

Beyond the sterile alternatives of liberalism and a 'neo-orthodoxy' grown mechanical, Milbank suggests the incarnate divine word is always mediated by human discourses, yet registers its presence by transfiguring these discourses down to their very roots.

The Word Made Strange provides a richly textured and broad-ranging inquiry that will serve to enrich contemporary intellectual debates across a range of disciplines.
