The Smart Study Guide
Book Hero Magic created this recommendation. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! IS THIS YOUR NEXT READ?
Drawing on the latest research into memory, information processing and learning, this book helps students to tailor their study techniques to their own particular learning style and psychological make-up. An exploration of the tools and techniques essential to success in studying and passing examinations.
FOR DISCUSSION - THIS BOOK HAS A LOT OF POTENTIAL BUT THERE ARE STRATEGIC ISSUES AROUND WHETHER OR NOT WE INVEST IN THE BIG, BUT COMPETITIVE, STUDY SKILLS MARKET. THERE ARE QUESTIONS TO BE ADDRESSED ABOUT THE BOOK (HOW APPLIED/PRACTICAL SHOULD IT BE, HOW MUCH FOCUS ON SELF-ASSESSMENT). I WANTED TO BRING THE PROJECT TO THE MEETING NOW TO ESTABLISH WHETHER OR NOT WE WANT TO PURSUE IT.
Market: Formal study skills courses are becoming an ever more common part of the university curriculum in the UK. Many universities are employing "study skills" tutors and running study skills courses during the university year and the Summer. For example, Huddersfield University now employs five "academic skills" tutors, one for each "school". This development is in response to the increasing numbers of students coming to university from non-traditional backgrounds, who need a lot of help and support with study skills. There is also a growth in lifelong learning programmes where study skills for older people returning to study are a core part of the curriculum.
The Book: In recent years there has been an avalanche of new information about memory, information processing and learning, yet there has been a delay in communicating this to the people who would benefit most. The principles of accelerated learning are not routinely taught to either students or tutors, and many people are expected to engage in formal study without knowing how to learn effectively. The Smart Study Guide aims to fill this gap, making modern learning research accessible to students. Existing study skills texts are traditional in their choice of topic areas and typically do not make use of latest thinking on accelerated and brain-friendly learning techniques.
This book aims to provide the student with innovative, fun ways of making their study more effective, and to tailor their study techniques to their own particular psychological style and make-up. Using questionnaires and self-tests, the student is asked to evaluate their own best learning styles (e.g. which "multiple intelligences" do they possess) and then to design their own learning programmes. The book is written in an extremely lively, interactive format (I have two sample chapters).
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
Endorsed by academics such as Dr Susie Page and Philip Race, the book is praised as evidence-based, fun, and practical. Reviewers commend its lively format and unique approach that challenges traditional study methods, encouraging readers to utilise all parts of their brain. It's seen as a fresh, comprehensive, and accessible guide that stands out in the crowded study skills market.
