Kenneth Janda sheds new light on the Republican Partyβs transformations, drawing on a wide range of quantitative and qualitative evidence. He examines nearly three thousand planks from every Republican platform since 1856 as well as candidate statements and historical sources.
The Republican Evolution by Kenneth Janda explores the profound transformations of the Republican Party from its founding in 1854 to the present day under Donald Trump. Initially formed to oppose slavery and its expansion, the party has shifted so extensively that it scarcely resembles the party of Lincoln or even Eisenhower. This book delves into how and why such drastic changes have occurred.
Janda illuminates the Republican Party's transformations by analysing a wide range of quantitative and qualitative evidence. He examines nearly three thousand planks from every Republican platform since 1856, along with candidate statements and historical sources. Through this, he traces the evolution of the party's positions on critical issues such as states' rights, trade, taxation, regulation, law and order, immigration, environmental protection, and voting rights.
Janda argues that the GOP has experienced three main phases throughout its history. Initially committed to governance, the party gradually became vehemently opposed to government. In its first several decades, the Republican Party emphasised national authority and economic development. However, by the late 1920s, it had begun to downplay the role of government, favouring a philosophy rooted in free markets. The nomination of Barry Goldwater in 1964 marked a significant turning point, after which the party endorsed states' rights, opposed civil rights, and became increasingly ethnocentric.
Richly documented with scores of figures and tables, The Republican Evolution offers a new perspective on how the GOP evolved into an anti-government partyβand it questions whether the party can step back from the brink of authoritarianism.
