The Poet Empress

I absolutely ADORED this even though it TORE MY WHOLE HEART OUT MULTIPLE TIMES.
The storytelling in this is impeccably paced, beautifully written, and absolutely impossible to predict down to the very last page.
It was traumatic and yet I would recommend it to everyone.

The Poet Empress by Shen Tao is a quietly subversive novel that keeps taking unexpected turns, all of which feel earned rather than just for the sake of a shocking twist. I really like how interesting and unique literomancy is, a magic system based on the depth of feeling that can be captured in poetry. The idea that this power is theoretically accessible to anyone with an education really helps to emphasise the gender and class divide that is so central to this narrative.

The story’s real strength lies in its deep focus on character and relationships, building a layered portrait that explores trauma, ambition, and personal responsibility while reinforcing the idea that no single perspective can fully explain a person.

While the prose is clear, it’s surprisingly matter-of-fact for such a poetic premise, and could have leaned more lyrical. Still, it’s a thoughtful, character-driven novel that leaves space for a very unconventional story about the power of love.
