Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb marks the beginning of an extraordinary adventure in the rich and immersive world of the Six Duchies. Set against the backdrop of a kingdom teetering on the brink of civil war, this gripping tale introduces readers to FitzChivalry Farseer, a royal bastard whose existence threatens the stability of the crown.

When the crown prince's secret is revealed, Fitz is abandoned and left to grow up in the shadow of the castle. Sheltered within the castle stables, he forms bonds with the king’s fool, the street children of the lower city, and finds solace in his unusual ability to communicate with animals. Despite his noble blood, Fitz is ostracised and learns to navigate a life filled with adversity and cruelty.

Recognising his potential, the royal family decides to make Fitz useful to the crown. Under a veil of secrecy, he is trained in the clandestine arts of an assassin, learning the skills needed to strike from the shadows. Concurrently, he is introduced to the ancient and powerful magic of the Farseer family, a mystical heritage that connects him to the very heart of his royal lineage.

However, Fitz's journey is fraught with peril. His tutor, a skilled assassin himself, harbours deep political ambitions and sees Fitz as a threat that must be eliminated. As the kingdom teeters on the edge of chaos, Fitz must harness his skills and wits to survive. His destiny, intricately tied to the fate of the Six Duchies, may hold the key to the kingdom’s salvation.

About the Author

Robin Hobb is one of the world's finest writers of epic fiction. She was born in California in 1952 but raised in Alaska, where she learned how to raise a wolf cub, to skin a moose and to survive in the wilderness. When she married a fisherman who fished herring and the Kodiak salmon-run for half the year, these skills would stand her in good stead. She raised her family, ran a smallholding, delivered post to her remote community, all at the same time as writing stories and novels. She succeeded on all fronts, raising four children and becoming an internationally best-selling writer. She lives in Tacoma, Washington State.
