The Petticoat Parade
The Petticoat Parade is a social history of Josie de Bray and the madams of the Perth red light district, written by award-winning author, Leigh Straw.
Josie de Bray, also known as Madam Monnier or Marie Louise Monnier, was a brothel madam who owned most of Roe Street, Perth from World War I up to the 1940s. A returned soldier attempted to shoot her dead in her brothel in 1917, and her 'bungalow' became a focal point of underworld violence during the 1920s.
She travelled back to France before World War II to visit her family, where she was bombed out of homes repeatedly and captured by German forces. She was a prisoner of war, and one story even places her in a concentration camp. Despite these ordeals, she survived, returned to Perth in 1947, and resumed her business on Roe Street until her death in 1953, having amassed a fortune.
