Love found them when it matter. A moving memoir of late-in-life love and the courage to care.
Love found them when it matter. A moving memoir of late-in-life love and the courage to care.
The Luckiest Unlucky Couple by Alicia Shepard is a late-in-life love story that unfolds between two adventurers, only to have everything change dramatically. When he is cured, she is diagnosed, and what follows is a journey filled with resilience, courage, and the power of love.
The story begins with Alicia (Lisa), a successful journalist and author in her late 50s. She is single, mostly happy, and has given up on finding love again after her first marriage ended abruptly. Her friends convince her to try Match.com, where she finds the love of her life. Unexpectedly, he is diagnosed with melanoma that has spread to his brain. Through immunotherapy, he is cured, and during his illness, Lisa and his children become a close-knit family. This is the first half of the book.
Not long after his recovery, Lisa is diagnosed with lung cancer. The second half of the book delves into her struggle with cancer, her journey of dying, surrendering to support, getting remarried, and ultimately discovering a deeper love for everything. The book not only chronicles her emotional journey but also provides valuable information on cutting-edge immunotherapy techniques and living in the moment, especially when it's not your natural inclination.
The epilogue, written by her husband, shares insights into life after Lisa's passing. In the appendix, the couple offers helpful tips for patients and families grappling with cancer.
