The Great Chain of Being explores the traditional worldview held by philosophers and scientists from antiquity to the late eighteenth century. Arthur O. Lovejoy analyses the three key principlesโ€”plenitude, continuity, and graduationโ€”that shaped this conception of the world. Drawing from Plato, Aristotle, and Neoplatonic philosophy, he traces the evolution and diverse adaptations of the idea in religious, metaphysical, ethical, aesthetic, astronomical, and biological thought. The book also examines how this worldview influenced literature and the collective imagination over two millennia.

From later antiquity to the close of the 18th century, most educated men accepted without question a traditional view of the plan and structure of the world. In this volume, Lovejoy copiously illustrates the influence of this conception, and of the ideas out of which it was compounded, upon the imagination and feelings as expressed in literature.

From later antiquity down to the close of the eighteenth century, most philosophers and men of science and, indeed, most educated men, accepted without question a traditional view of the plan and structure of the world.

In this volume, which embodies the William James lectures for 1933, Arthur O. Lovejoy points out the three principlesโ€”plenitude, continuity, and graduationโ€”which were combined in this conception. He analyzes their origins in the philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, and the Neoplatonists; traces the most important of their diverse ramifications in subsequent religious thought, in metaphysics, in ethics and aesthetics, and in astronomical and biological theories; and copiously illustrates the influence of the conception as a whole, and of the ideas out of which it was compounded, upon the imagination and feelings as expressed in literature.

The Great Chain of Being is a seminal work that explores these themes in depth, providing a comprehensive examination of how these principles shaped intellectual history.
