The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank is among the most enduring documents of the 20th century. It chronicles Anne's life in hiding from 12 June 1942 to 1 August 1944. Initially, she wrote it strictly for herself.

However, in 1944, Anne's perspective shifted when Gerrit Bolkestein, a member of the Dutch government in exile, announced in a radio broadcast from London the hope to collect eyewitness accounts of the suffering of the Dutch people under the German occupation. He mentioned that documents such as letters and diaries could be made available to the public to convey their experiences.

Inspired by this, Anne Frank decided that when the war was over, she would publish a book based on her diary, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be a testament to the human spirit in the darkest of times.
