By the author of the international Number One bestsellers Killers of the Flower Moon and The Wager

Enter a world where a Polish detective tries to decipher whether an author embedded hints about a real murder within his post-modern novel, blurring the lines between fiction and reality. Join an arson investigator in a race against time to establish the innocence of a man on the brink of execution, facing the relentless force of the judicial system. Embark on a scientific quest as researchers chase after a mythical sea monster, pushing the boundaries of what we consider possible.

‘Chilling . . . Poignant . . . Haunting and gripping . . . gets into worlds that are otherwise invisible to us’

Daily Mail

In this captivating collection, David Grann masterfully unravels twelve real-life enigmas, each more intriguing than the last. Each story is intricately detailed and explores a unique, sometimes unnerving, aspect of the human condition. The characters within these narratives are grounded in reality—motivated by secrets, deception, and, at times, murder. Some protagonists are driven to the edge of madness by their obsessions and quests for truth.

Throughout the book, Grann lays bare the incredible and often elusive nature of truth. The stories are meticulously researched, showcasing his dedication to uncovering the hidden layers of these real-life puzzles. Just as the legendary Sherlock Holmes famously stated, ‘Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent’, these stories prove that reality can often surpass the wildest imaginations in its complexity and allure.

The Devil and Sherlock Holmes will captivate readers who appreciate the intricate dance between truth and mystery, providing a hauntingly insightful glimpse into the lengths people will go to uncover—or conceal—the truth.
