A story of two brothers, born and raised in the shadow of Taranaki Maunga, from major new literary talent and No. 1 bestselling author Airana Ngarewa.

In the evocative and deeply moving novel The Bone Tree, Airana Ngarewa captures the resilience of family, the shadows of the past, and the strength of the human spirit. Set in the rugged and mystical landscape of Taranaki Maunga, the story follows brothers Kauri and Black, whose lives are thrown into turmoil after their mother's mysterious disappearance six months prior.

With their father struggling to cope, the ever-present threat of child services looms over the family, threatening to separate the brothers. Determined to keep his family together, Kauri embarks on a perilous journey into their family's troubled past. He believes that understanding the roots of their pain is the key to breaking the cycle of violence and ensuring a better future for himself and Black.

Pressured by time and the unsympathetic scrutiny of child services, Kauri finds himself in a race against the clock. An unexpected accident brings urgency to his quest, forcing him to reach out and seek help, realising that his bravery and strength alone may not be enough to save his brother.

The Bone Tree is a stunning and unforgettable tale, perfect for fans of Aue by Becky Manawatu, Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera, and Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton. Ngarewa's narrative is both powerful and poetic, drawing readers into a story that is deeply rooted in cultural heritage and the complexities of familial bonds.
