Mischievous and smart, Tom Sawyer is one of American literature's most beloved literary characters. Originally published in 1876, Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer chronicles the exploits of Tom and his friendsβincluding Twain's other lovable rogue, Huckleberry Finnβas they witness a murder, play at being pirates along the Mississippi River, hunt for treasure, and even attend their own funeral.
Inspired by Twain's own boyhood, this spirited classic is full of high jinks, not to mention a good deal of suspense.

About the Author
Mark Twain (1835β1910) was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Missouri. Twainβs name is synonymous with his American classics The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). Twain was born shortly after an appearance by Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would βgo out with itβ, too. As chance would have it, he died the day after the comet returned in 1910. Twain was a very influential author whose works are timeless pieces that are still being taught today in classrooms to students of all ages.
Judith John (Glossary) is a writer and editor specializing in literature and history. A former secondary school English Language and Literature teacher, she has subsequently worked as an editor on major educational projects, including English A: Literature for the Pearson International Baccalaureate series. Judithβs major research interests include Romantic and Gothic literature, and Renaissance drama.
