Delve into the world of witty Māori banter with Te Reo Kapekape by Hona Black, a delightful exploration of the playful yet sharp expressions that reflect the heart and humour of Māori culture. Building upon the success of He Iti te Kupu: Māori Metaphors and Similes, this vibrant book invites readers into a tapestry of phrases that capture the spirit of jesting and satire inherent in Māori life.

In Te Reo Kapekape, Hona Black brings to life the rich oral traditions of Māori language with over 130 distinctive expressions, blending wit and wisdom. Curious about how to affectionately tease a friend by calling them a 'roro hipi' or perhaps deliver a colourful retort in te reo Māori? This book provides endless opportunities to enrich your vocabulary with phrases destined to invigorate conversations and bring a smile to your face.

The phrases are thoughtfully classified into four engaging chapters: "Above the Hip", "Below the Hip", "Other Phrases", and "Idioms". These sections cleverly categorise the sayings to facilitate easy navigation through the varied expressions. Each entry is illustrated with characters and lively dialogues, ensuring that readers not only grasp the meanings but also see the context in which these sayings thrive. This makes the book an exceptional tool for anyone interested in enhancing their te reo Māori or English with vivacious, cheeky expressions.

Ideal for both Māori language learners and seasoned speakers, Te Reo Kapekape is a treasure trove of cultural insight and linguistic fun. Whether your aim is to add levity to your conversations, surprise friends with a deftly used idiom, or simply appreciate the humour that unites people across cultures, this book has something for everyone. Step out of the ordinary with Te Reo Kapekape, and embrace the joyous appeal of language that tickles, teases, and connects.
